Reunion on Google Maps.
Located near Madagascar Island and not far from Mauritius archipelago, the island of Reunion is part of the French overseas department. Occupied by French in the mid-seventeenth century, the island has always been a destination for migration by African, Chinese, Malaysian and Indian populations, creating a multi-ethnic population. The island is characterized by the presence of the Piton de Neige volcano over three thousand meters high and one of the highest mountains of Indian Ocean and of the active volcano called Piton de la Fournaise. The presence of volcanoes makes the mountainous island with a thin coastal strip and some beaches protected, on the western side, by coral reef. In this second part of reportage, we visit the volcanic National Parks within the island such as the Circle de Mafate, Plaines des Sables, and Plaine des Cafres, volcanoes that are partly extinct and partly active, such as the Piton de la Fournaise from which lava flows go down from the 2632 meters of altitude to the sea on the south coast of Sainte Rose. Unforgettable nature shows for an interesting and dynamic journey with long walks among the volcanic cones and lush vegetation that covers tropical forests the along the mountains slopes of the inland area of the territory.
