Due to its position, sheltered from the winds and the sea, the original fishing village frequented first by the Greeks, then by the Romans and subsequently attacked by Saracen pirates who induced the population to move towards the hills, at the end of the 13th century the County of Provence to encourage the inhabitants to return to the seaside, he granted tax exemption by calling the new coastal village Villa Franca or tax-free village.
