Entrevaux on Google Maps.
About seventy kilometers from Nice, near the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Var River flows through a narrow, wooded valley. At one of the many tight bends the river makes on its descent toward the French Riviera, the medieval town of Entrevaux rises up; it is a small village nestled at the foot of a towering rock topped by a fortress. This stronghold was designed in the mid-17th century by the renowned Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis de Vauban, on the orders of King Louis XIV of France. Protected by thick walls, the town is accessible only via a stone bridge. The settlement has endured through the centuries, retaining its medieval charm and atmosphere thanks in part to the ancient path that winds its way up to the fortress, shielded by stone walls. Although the fortress is currently undergoing restoration, many completed works are already visible along the ascent; upon reaching the fortress square, visitors are struck by the spectacular view of the valley and the river that almost encircles the historic town. It is a destination visited by tourists who leave the bustling French Riviera in search of peaceful places rich in history and culture like Entrevaux.
