Saint Martin on Google Maps.
The island is divided into two parts, being partly French territory and partly Dutch territory. This division dates back to colonial times when France, Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and England invaded Caribbean islands to subjugate them to their respective kingdoms. Saint Martin in French or Sint Maarten in Dutch, still lives this strange colonial reality with very different cultures and traditions between them. The island is largely covered by forests mainly in the central mountainous area while the plains and some coastal areas are urbanized with two distinct capitals: Marigot (French) and Philipsburg (Dutch). In the past, was the agriculture that brought work and prosperity to the island while today is the tourism the major economy of the island. It is mainly a seaside resort thanks to the presence of large beaches and excellent hotel accommodation. A quiet holiday destination to enjoying local rum cocktails, to hiring a car or scooter to visit the island or to rent one of the many charter boats sailing in the archipelago.
