Tallin is not only the capital of the small state of the former Soviet Union but it is a major financial, industrial, cultural, educational and research center of Estonia. Substantially the city, very European thanks to the important tourist flow that visit the town, is divided into three areas: the Toompea or "Cathedral Hill", once home to the aristocracy of the Danish, German and Russian rulers and today the seat of the Estonian parliament, government and some embassies. The Old Town, the "city of the citizens", the historical center that in the Middle Ages was the commercial center of the city that has kept until today medieval atmospheres and customs and the new town. Tallinn's Old Town is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
