Jerash on Google Maps.
Jerash is located about 50 kilometers from the capital of Jordan, Amman. The large archaeological site contains the ruins of one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world. Inside the site you can visit two large theaters, in the south and in the north area where shows and events are still held today. The large hippodrome where Roman chariot races once took place today is the first site thing you visit upon entering the archaeological area. From the nearby oval square with its splendid perimeter colonnade, you access the 800 meter long stone-paved avenue on either side of which are present the ruins of the Nymphaeum, the ornamental fountain built in 191 BC, the ancient temple of Dionysus today called the "cathedral" and other temples scattered across the low hills of the archaeological area. The visit ends in the museum where finds from the Neolithic to the Mamluk period (1250-1517) are exhibited. A visit to Jerash during a trip in Jordan is definitely a destination not to be missed.
