Less famous of the nearby ski resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren, Meiringen is known as the city where is born the meringue. In this city in 1600, the pastry chef Gasparini, created for the first time the sweet then became famous all over the world.
In the nearby Reichenbach Falls instead, the writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did die literarily in his novel between the waters of the waterfall, the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. In the museum dedicated to Sherlock Holmes in Meiringen, there is the reproduction of his apartment and numerous items that reminiscent Holmes and his writer.
