The Historic Carnival of Ivrea (from February 11 to March 1), originated in the early 1800, was inspired from a fact happened in the Middle Ages when a baron who starved the town, was driven away thanks to a miller’s daughter who rebelled against the “jus primae noctis” roused the people to revolt. Even today, the Miller's daughter is the heroine of the Carnival, accompanied by General and its guards. The spectacular Oranges Battle, is the people’s rebellion against tyranny. In the battle the people, represented by orange throwers on foot without any protection, pull the oranges at the feudal lord’s army, protected by masks, on the horse-drawn carts. Although the Carnival of Ivrea lasts practically the whole month of February with events and shows, the heart of the carnival are the three days of the battle of the oranges. A tradition, even for many tourists who come to Ivrea from around the world, absolutely unforgettable.
